Composition Program

A project of the AMF Institute's Center for New Music, the pre-college composition program, is a summer intensive for composers under 18.

During the six weeks, composers gain valuable experience through weekly lessons, daily seminars, and masterclasses. Each participant works toward the goal of premiering a new work written for one of our resident ensembles.

The program leverages groundbreaking courses offered by our collegiate level Composition Program.

Program Highlights

  • Our programs are modular and allow students the flexibility to choose from our various course offerings

Program Electives

In addition to the core program, participants may take advantage of the following electives available during the festival season.

Screen Scoring

Led by the NYU Screen Scoring program faculty members, the program is an intensive course designed to provide an immersion into the fundamental concepts of scoring for the motion picture. Learn key concepts, including compositional process, orchestration using virtual and acoustical instruments, editing and mastering, and the screen scoring industry. The program is available during Session 2.

MUGIC™ Lab presentation


The project began as an official collaboration with IRCAM (Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique). Access unique courses including Programming for Musicians, MaxMSP Bootcamp, and electronic music seminars. The program is available during Session 1.

Orchestra Reading

Full-session participants are offered a chance to take part in AMF Orchestra Reading. This is an exceptional opportunity to hear a live rendition of an orchestral work, receive an archival recording, and receive valuable feedback.

Audition Intensive participants

Audition Intensive

Audition Intensive is a special program designed for students preparing for an upcoming audition at a conservatory or a musical institution. The goal of the program is to help participants channel their focus during the festival in order to create a successful audition portfolio during and after the festival season.

Audition Requirements

  • Submit 1-2 representative scores and accompanying recordings (if available).

  • Recommendations are optional.
