It has been quite a season of stellar performances and musical highlights in Waterville. Now the Atlantic Music Festival is poised to begin a final week of outstanding free concerts with a joyful reunion—a return visit by Jaime Laredo and Sharon Robinson. Audiences at last year's Atlantic Music Festival will remember their beautiful performance of Danielpour's poignant A Child's Reliquary. This time the two virtuosi will join the AMF Orchestra (conducted by Sarah Hicks) for Brahms' magnificent Double Concerto for Violin, Cello and Orchestra. The concert takes place Saturday, July 31st at 7 PM in Strider Theater (Runnals Building) on the Colby College campus.
Jaime Laredo is a violinist, conductor, chamber musician and recitalist extraordinaire, whose impressive resume includes his current stint as conductor of the Vermont Symphony. Sharon Robinson is regarded as one of the leading cellists of her generation; she performs and records internationally with the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio. At the podium will be Harvard and Curtis Institute of Music alum Sarah Hicks, who now serves as the Minnesota Orchestra's principal conductor of pops and presentations.
A full house is expected for this very special event. While there is no charge for admission, reservations are strongly encouraged, and can be made on the AMF website or by phone.
The week's festivities continue on Sunday, August 1st with the annual AMF Artist's Choice concert beginning at 7 PM in Lorimer Chapel at Colby. It's the performing company's turn to pick the music…and the audience is sure to be delighted with the tuneful results!
On Wednesday, August 4th, the Festival offers more wonderful chamber music (7 PM in Lorimer Chapel), and the season concludes with a grand finale AMF Orchestra concert on Thursday, August 5th, 7 PM in Strider Theater. The finale concert, under the baton of resident conductor David Rahbee, will feature works by Mozart, Siblelius and a work by Festival music director Solbong Kim.
